LPA / Moving Image / Nick David / Carnival: A Tropical Isles' Tale
Documentary and lifestyle photographer Nick David has collaborated with filmmaker Jack Flynn on a short film following an East London dance group in the weeks leading up to Hackney carnival. Filmed over several weeks last summer, Nick and Jack follow the dancers in local charity group Tropical Isles as they practice their routines and finally perform on the day of the carnival. Speaking to the dancers Nick and Jack manage to capture the excitement and energy the dancers feel in the run up to the Carnival and what dancing means to them.
Talking about the carnival one dancer Nick and Jack interviewed described Carnival day as "the best time of the year" and another said that the night before carnival he can't sleep, he is just smiling the whole night, Nick and Jack manage to capture that feeling in this film and also explore how dancing has helped the young people involved living in a sometimes tough urban environment.
'Carnival: A Tropical Isles' Tale' has been featured on both National Geographic and Atlantic website and will be shown as part of East End Film Festival this Saturday 3rd June at Old Spitalfields Market from 4pm!
