LPA Photographers / Katrina Lawson Johnston / The Space Between
Over the past two years, while the world has gone through a unprecedented change, Katrina has been documenting another change, that of St John at Hackney.
Katrina, in collaboration with five other photographers, has been documenting the huge transformation that St John has been going through, capturing moments of the change along the way. These moments have been collated together to form an online exhibition entitled ‘The Space Between’.
In Katrina’s own words ‘standing in the completed St John at Hackney today, it is difficult to imagine all that came before, during this building's almost 250 years standing in the heart of Hackney.’ These images act as a memory of these in between moments, ‘these are moments that would otherwise stand to be lost or forgotten in the collective memory of the church and all the people that love this place.”
The interior was designed by architect John Pawson, and Es Devlin has her first permanent piece of art work installed in one of the chapels off the side of the main space.
Katrina, who has a special connection to the space, summarises ‘…this work tries to say that there is something sacred in our moments of ‘in between’. All things are constantly being made, and re-made – and our journeys from one state to another are just as important as where we end up. Throughout this process we were constantly reminded that this was not just a building, but a place full of tangible sanctity, peace and ultimately – love.’
Beautiful images of a beautiful space, well done Katrina!
