EMMA STONER / BELTANE IN GLASTONBURY
Happy June! Not only is it home to summer but also the nation’s favourite festival, Glastonbury!
When this town isn’t hosting some of the best talent in the music industry you can find it indulging in other activities such as Beltane. Emma captured this eccentric celebration last month.
‘I joined Pagans and Green Men for Beltane celebrations in Glastonbury. This included Morris dancing, maypoles, hand-fasting and a May Queen.
Beltane is an ancient Celtic seasonal festival. It marks the point between the spring equinox and summer solstice. Communities have celebrated this day for centuries. It is the day when livestock would go out to pasture and rituals were performed to protect cattle and encourage growth. Fertility is a major theme in Beltane rituals, with the phallic maypole at the centre of celebrations. It is a time for abundance, passion, renewal and hope.’ Emma Stoner
