LPA Futures / Josh Adam Jones / Eizo Student Award 2019
LPA Futures 2019 Winner Josh Adam Jones has been continuing his string of award wins recently by winning the Eizo Student Award 2019!
Eizo make monitor screens for creative people but they also run a Student Photography Award ‘which recognises the best in new creative image making’. There are three winners and each winner receives an Eizo ColorEdge monitor and a work placement offer with a leading photographer!
Josh Adam Jones, who is currently studying a part-time MA Course in Photography at the University of the West of England, Bristol, was selected as one of the three winners for his project, XO.
XO, concentrates on the relationship between local people and outsiders in Oman’s capital city, Muscat, with an emphasis on human aspects of the Middle East and how people are united by diversity.
Catherine Hyland, one of the judges of the Eizo Student Award said about Josh’s work ‘I think Josh has a fantastic eye for tone and colour that is particular nuanced. The focus on diaspora is a particular significant subject matter at this moment in time and something we should al be thinking about. There is a sense of nostalgia to the series that resonates with the viewer and it successfully raised important questions about one history and heritage.’
Josh has published a book about his XO series (entitled XO) which showcases Josh’s images from his first visit to Oman and aims to deal with common Western misconceptions of the East, and misrepresentations of Oriental values and beliefs.
‘What Josh offers instead is the day-to-day complexity of a country, resisting the urge toward drama. The resulting project is a series of photographs so deliberately optimistic that they verge on fiction, the offering of a photographer trying to remedy his own misconceptions.’ - Harry Flook, 2019.
Congratulations Josh!
